Local conditions

Why Staten Island properties flood the way they do

The East Shore between Midland Beach, New Dorp Beach, and Oakwood Beach took the worst residential losses of Hurricane Sandy anywhere in the city, and the recovery reshaped the housing stock. Many homes here are now elevated, which changes where water goes and which utilities are exposed. The Bluebelt system handles stormwater across the South Shore effectively in ordinary rain and is simply overwhelmed in extreme events. Interior neighborhoods sit on clay soils that shed water toward foundations rather than absorbing it.

What we see most often in Staten Island

  • East Shore storm surge and repetitive-loss properties
  • Elevated-home utility and crawlspace exposure
  • Bluebelt overflow during extreme rainfall
  • Clay-soil hydrostatic pressure against foundations

Our process

How asbestos abatement actually works

No step here is optional and none of them can be reordered. If a contractor skips one, ask which.

  1. 01

    Survey and sampling

You cannot identify asbestos by looking at it. Suspect material is sampled and analysed by an accredited laboratory before anything is disturbed.

  2. 02

    Scope and notification

New York requires abatement work to be filed and notified before it starts. That notification period is why this work is scheduled rather than same-day.

  3. 03

    Containment

The work area is sealed under negative air pressure with HEPA filtration and a decontamination unit, so fibres cannot reach the rest of the building.

  4. 04

    Controlled removal

Material is kept wet and removed intact wherever possible. Dry sanding, sweeping and breaking are what release fibres, and none of them belong on an abatement job.

  5. 05

    Disposal

Waste is double-bagged, labelled and manifested to a landfill permitted to receive it. You get the manifest.

  6. 06

    Clearance testing

An independent air monitoring firm clears the space before containment comes down. We do not clear our own work.

FAQ

Asbestos questions from Staten Island

If yours is not here, call and ask. You will get a straight answer, not a callback from a sales team.

How soon can you start in Staten Island?
This is scheduled work, not emergency dispatch. Once the survey results are back we file the required notifications, and that notice period is usually what sets the start date rather than our calendar. We will give you the real timeline on the first call.
Do I have to remove asbestos if I have it?
Often not. Asbestos-containing material that is intact, undamaged and left alone is generally safer managed in place than removed. Removal becomes necessary when the material is damaged, when it will be disturbed by renovation or demolition, or when a survey required for a sale or permit calls for it. Anyone who tells you every finding must come out is selling, not advising.
How do I know if there is asbestos in my house?
Age is the first signal. Buildings put up before the early 1980s frequently contain it in floor tile, pipe and boiler insulation, roofing, siding, and textured ceilings. Beyond that, testing is the only answer, because asbestos cannot be identified by eye and a lab result is what any regulator or buyer will ask for.
Can I take it out myself?
New York regulates asbestos work, and for good reason: the exposure risk comes from disturbing the material, which is exactly what an unprotected removal does. Homeowner work on a single-family home has narrow allowances under federal rules, but the state and New York City both impose requirements on top of that. Have it surveyed before you touch it.
Will insurance pay for asbestos removal?
Usually not on its own. Asbestos abatement is typically treated as a maintenance or improvement cost rather than a sudden loss. Where it does get covered is when abatement becomes necessary because of a covered loss - a fire or water event that disturbs material that was previously intact and safe. We document it that way when that is what happened.
